Coastal balustrades: beating the salt air.

Sydney is a coastal city, and the strip within a few kilometres of the surf or the harbour is a genuinely harsh environment for metal. The same balustrade that stays perfect in Castle Hill can be showing brown spots in Manly within a year if it is built in the wrong spec. Here is how we build for the coast.

What salt air actually does

Sea spray carries chlorides that settle on every outdoor surface and attack steel wherever the protective layer is weakest: welds, cut edges, fixings, and the fine scratches in a brushed finish. On coated steel the result is rust creeping from the edges. On the wrong stainless it is "tea staining", the brown film that makes a two-year-old balustrade look twenty.

304 vs 316: the grade that earns its name

Grade 304 stainless is the everyday standard and it is fine inland. Grade 316 adds molybdenum, which resists chloride attack, and it is called marine grade for a reason. Near the ocean, the harbour or a pool, 316 is what we use for wire, spigots, fixings and polished rails. The cost difference is small against the cost of replacing hardware that failed early.

Coated steel can live on the coast too

Powder-coated or galvanised steel balustrades work near the water when they are specified for it: a marine-grade coating system, sealed edges and welds, and 316 fixings so the bolts do not fail before the rail. Hot-dip galvanising under a powder coat, a duplex system, is the belt-and-braces option for exposed external steel.

Finish and maintenance matter more out here

A smoother polished surface gives salt fewer places to sit, so we spec finer finishes on coastal stainless. And every coastal balustrade, in any material, lasts longer with an occasional fresh-water rinse, which is a five-minute job with a hose. We hand over the maintenance note with the job so you know exactly what it needs.

Common questions

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?
Both are stainless, but 316 contains molybdenum, which makes it far more resistant to the chloride attack that comes with salt air. Inland, 304 is usually fine. Within a few kilometres of the ocean or the harbour, 316 is the safe spec for wire, fixings and polished rails.
Why is my stainless balustrade showing rust spots?
That is usually tea staining: surface corrosion from salt sitting on the steel, common on coastal jobs built in the wrong grade or never washed down. The fix is the right grade (316), a smoother finish, and an occasional fresh-water rinse.
