Steel balustrades · Sydney

Steel balustrades in Sydney.

Steel is the workhorse of the trade, and built properly it is as refined as anything in glass for less money. We fabricate steel and stainless steel balustrades across Sydney, from matte black flat-bar on a terrace to marine-grade stainless on a clifftop, all made in our own Bankstown workshop.

Options we build.

  • Flat bar
  • Vertical rod
  • Blade infill
  • Stainless steel
  • Matte black
  • Marine-grade 316

Flat bar, rod and blade

The design sets the look and the price. A flat-bar or vertical-rod balustrade is crisp and economical; a blade or custom infill is more of a feature. The trick is the proportion and the spacing, so it reads as architecture and not as a cage. We build to the NCC's no-climb and gap rules without losing the line.

Powder coat, galvanised or stainless

Matte black powder coat is the popular choice inland. Hot-dip galvanising adds corrosion protection for external and industrial work. Near the coast, marine-grade 316 stainless or stainless fixings stop the rust problem before it starts. We match the finish to where the balustrade actually lives.

Built and fitted by the same crew

Steel is unforgiving when it is measured by one team and fitted by another. We template on site, weld and dress in our workshop, and install with the same crew that built it, so the joints line up and the finish is even. That is the difference between a balustrade that looks made and one that looks bought.

Common questions

Are steel balustrades cheaper than glass?
Usually, yes, especially a simple flat-bar or vertical-rod design. The gap narrows once you add a stainless handrail. Steel also wins on durability and gives you a matte black or industrial look glass cannot.
What stainless steel grade do you use for coastal jobs?
Marine-grade 316 stainless, or 316 fixings on a coated steel job, for anything near salt air. It is the difference between a balustrade that stays clean and one that weeps rust after a winter.
Do steel balustrades meet the building code?
Yes. We build to AS 1170 for loads and the NCC for barrier heights and the no-climb and gap rules, and hand over the documentation a certifier will ask for.
