The brief

A backyard pool close to the water, with a raised deck looking over it. Glass around the pool so the yard stays one space; wire above so the deck keeps its outlook; and everything through one fabricator so the finishes match and the inspection happens once.

The compliance detail

Pool barriers fail inspections on small things: a gate that latches lazily, a boundary gap, a planter that becomes a climbing aid. We set the glass heights and gaps to AS 1926.1, hung a self-closing gate that latches from a whisper, and walked the non-climbable zone before the inspector did.

The salt problem

Two hundred metres from salt water, ordinary hardware stains in a season. Spigots, hinges, latch and every cable and fitting on the deck above are marine grade, and the handover note tells the owners the one job they have: an occasional fresh-water rinse.
